Process Report
The name of my campaign is “Say No to Fitspo” and the purpose of it is to expose the dangers of social media “fitspo” and unrealistic body standards. It is a positive platform for young girls that spreads body positivity and encourages confidence and positive body image. In order to bring this campaign to life, I created a Twitter account, a Pinterest board and a Buzzfeed article. The target audience is pre-teen and teenage girls and these genres all fall under the category of social media or internet based. With this being the demographic, Twitter and Pinterest were perfect, as teenagers are heavy users of both and Twitter is one of the most commonly used media platforms among teens. Pinterest is commonly used by young people as well, especially females. Buzzfeed articles are another genre that targets this age group as it is an app and a website that can be easily accessed online and shared to other media platforms. The three of these genres went hand in hand as they could easily be tied together through the use of social media and online sharing. For example, facts from the Buzzfeed article could easily be transferred to Tweets or Pinterest captions. Using facts and figures as well as my interview and sources from project 2, I was able to make these genres credible and factual.
On Twitter, I often wrote Tweets with a more personal feel as opposed to being factual as that is a convention of Twitter. Keeping the Tweets short and sweet and making them very personal and friendly make them much more appropriate for this platform. Because of the character limit, Tweets and usually very simple and straightforward. On Buzzfeed, it is more common to use a list form and gifs and photos to make it more whimsical and funny. This platform is generally a lighter and more humorous one as well, but incorporating some facts and figures along with comedic things allowed me to get the point across while keeping it simple and sticking to the conventions of Buzzfeed. Pinterest was the most factual and serious of the three. For this, I posted info graphs and informative links and photos. Along with these, I was able to write much more and incorporate more quotes, facts, and statistics into each post than I was with the other two genres. Each of these being social media platforms though, allowed me to be much more personal and create more of a connection with the viewers than I would have been able to otherwise.
I used a total of 3 social media outlets in order to reach my audience and advertise the campaign. I promoted each of my genres through the others. For example, the name of the Twitter account is included on the Buzzfeed article and in the description of the Pinterest board. The Buzzfeed article was promoted on the campaign Twitter as well as the Pinterest board and my personal ENC1101 Twitter. I also promoted my Pinterest and Twitter through my personal ENC account. By using the social media platforms to promote each of the others, I was able to create a connection among the genres and make them cohesive as a campaign. My Hashtag #saynotofitspo is also in the bio of the Pinterest account, the Buzzfeed article and used multiple times in the Tweets on the Twitter account.
Twitter was the most successful avenue as it reached the widest range of people and allowed me to follow a large amount of people that are involved in or related to this subject. I followed several people each day, totaling up to about 100. I followed accounts that relate to my campaign and people that fit the demographic, pre-teen and teenage girls. I then followed all the people that followed me in order to maintain their viewership and be able to be connected with all of them. This account received just under 50 follows which was the most successful of all three. On Pinterest, I used the same method, following a total of about 90 people relating to body positivity and received about 15 followers. It was more difficult as it takes much more time to build up a Pinterest account and large following. Promoting these genres for about two and a half to three weeks allowed me to build up a substantial Twitter following but I believe it would take much longer for the Pinterest account. The Buzzfeed article has been promoted on each of the other Networks for about 2 weeks or so.
Bringing this project together was completely different from any past project in every way. Though the obvious difference is that this assignment was not an essay, the pulling together of sources and facts in order to create these platforms was very time consuming and very different in the creative aspect. Because there were three different genres that all needed to relate to each other, this project required much more time to change the idea reached in project two into a physical, interactive campaign. Changing these ideas to fit the conventions of social networks and a Buzz feed article was very interesting because I had to consider what viewers want to see, not being professional and factual like when writing an essay. Picking out which ideas and facts were most important and what needed to be thrown out took a lot of time and on top of that, transforming these pieces into short and interesting Tweets, Pins, and article topics took a lot of creativity and thought that was not so much required for Project number 2. In addition to that, in this project, taking a side requires the genres to be more persuasive and opinionated, as opposed to project 2 in which the writer’s voice needed to be neutral.
If I could go back to project 2, I would tell myself to consider and write down the points that I felt would be most important when arguing one side and how I could use the sources and information I included in project two to create more interactive and opinionated points. When going through the articles to find information for my essay I would have highlighted the points that I felt would be most interesting and important when composing short Tweets and different points for the Pinterest and Buzzfeed article so that the process of choosing what facts to put on what platform would have been easier. Narrowing down information was definitely the most important and time consuming part of the project so doing that would have greatly simplified this process.
Evidence of Promotion

Short Assignment 2
In this project, I plan to carry over a large portion of the research sources used in project #2. The first source I would like to incorporate is my interview with Jennifer Joy. Because I was not able to use the entire interview in my project #2, I would like to include more of her answers and expertise into this project. I plan to use the article by Carrotte about health and fitness content on social media. I plan to draw many facts and supporting detail from this article as well as the article by Halliwell about model body size and the impact of these photos on girls and their body image. The Vaterlaus article also talks a lot about the effects of social media on body image and will be useful in backing up arguments and providing statistics. Using details from the two articles on eating disorders will also be useful as well as the article titled “Beauty is only Photoshop Deep” when I talk about the negative effects of social media models and Photoshop and how it is making the body standard unrealistic. These sources will tie my projects together and back up all of the statements that I make throughout this process. and I hope that most articles that I referenced in my project two will play a part in this project somehow as they all directly relate to my subject and contribute to my side of the argument.
Short Assignment 1
The name of the campaign is beYOUtiful and it is meant to encourage teenage girls to spread positivity and turn body shaming and this societal standard into a community of young girls that bring each other up. It also brings awareness to the dangers of the “perfect” bodies seen online. The first genre I plan to assemble is a Twitter account dedicated to the campaign as this is one of the main platforms of social media used by the target demographic, teenage girls. Twitter will allow me to display positive messages that can be retweeted and used to encourage girls. It will also allow me to tweet facts, figures and statistics. To do this, I will need to create another Twitter account and choose tweets and retweets in order to get the message across. My second genre will be a Pinterest board. This will allow me to post and re-pin encouraging and inspiring photos and stories as well as dedicate a board specifically to the campaign. This is another platform that is heavily used by teenage girls and is one of the forms of social media in which they are more willing to read longer stories and posts. In order to do this, I will have to create and chose the layout, posts and stories that I will use on the board. The third genre will be a Buzzfeed article. This is another platform heavily used by the target audience and it will be the most formal and detailed form of the three. This will allow me to say more than the other two will but still reach the audience in an engaging way. It is also sharable and is a good way for this information to be shared. In order to create this, I will have to educate myself on how to create on and navigate Buzzfeed as well as create an account and use my information and statistics from the previous project to create it. This will be the most complex of the three.
