Genre is the category in which a piece of writing fits. Genres are overlapping and pieces may fall under several different types or categories. Bitzer explains that when somebody writes a new kind of composition, others will use that as a foundation and a new genre will be formed. Inspiration creates genres, essentially. Rhetorical situations require responses and these responses must appropriately fit the situation in order for it to make sense and address it's purpose. Genres are chosen based on the purpose of a piece of writing and the person writing/ being addressed. The last genre in which i composed would all under the academic/informative genre, it also included some persuasion. I wrote a research paper about an advertisement of my choosing. I informed my professor on the advertisement, it's purpose , background and who the audience was supposed to be. I then described how it was supposed to make the audience feel. I wrote about how it made me feel personally and explained what techniques the designer used to achieve their goal. I explained why i felt that it was an effective piece and why the ideas and techniques used by the creator were better than many other advertisements and methods of advertising. It all tied back to informing and persuading, as well as being academic as it was for a college course.
