Twitter Research

The individual that i found and followed on Twitter is Beth T Bell. She is a psychologist and researches teenage culture with a focus in body image and social media. She focuses on much of the same topics that i want to focus on in my paper. She advocates against apps that allow young people to do plastic surgery like effects on photographs. She talks a lot about how young girls are affected by the media and spreads awareness of programs to encourage these girls. She discusses different ways that photoshop is present in the media and how models set a standard for a perfect body. A specific example of social media on body image that she shares to the app is one about girls who use Instagram to fight eating disorders. Examples such as these will be perfect for me to incorporate. She speaks out about the idea of "revenge bodies" on social media and argues that females should not base themselves on their bodies and the idea of "perfect figures". I would like to incorporate this idea in particular into my paper as many famous people such as Khloe Kardashian have taken to the media to hype up the idea of a revenge body and I want to highlight this. She retweets and mentions many different readings about #Fitspo images on social media and the roles that they play, which is exactly what I want to detail in my paper. She even goes as far as to discuss race in the world of social media models. Overall she tweets about a lot of female positivity and a lot about body image. Her view point is mostly focusing a lot on the negative parts of social media models. I hope to use several of these points and highlight a lot of what she mentions in my research paper when I argue the side that social media makes is hard for young girls to be body positive. This will allow me to present a strong argument on this point of view. She gives a lot of great ideas and inspiration for topics and points to include when detailing that view point. By looking at it from her point of view as a researcher on this topic, I hope to strengthen my writing on this subject.
